How to store your watches the right way

A good watch is built to last a lifetime — and a little care keeps it running and looking its best. Here is how we store ours.

Keep them out of sun and heat

Direct sunlight fades dials and dries out straps. Radiators and sunny windowsills do the same. A closed box in a cool, dry drawer is the safest home.

Give each watch its own space

Watches knocking against each other pick up scratches fast. A lined box or a travel roll keeps every piece cushioned and separated, so cases and crystals stay clean.

Keep automatics moving

Automatic movements like to stay wound. If you rotate between several, a watch winder keeps them ready to wear. For pieces you set aside, a gentle wind every few weeks keeps the oils moving.

Travel with protection

Loose watches in a suitcase are asking for trouble. A roll with padded slots protects them on the move and keeps straps from tangling.

Store them well, and your watches will look as good in twenty years as they do today.
